Not infrequently there is silence in the lecture hall when the lecturer asks a question in the lecture. In the best case, there are occasional, tentative hand messages, and this mostly from the people who have understood the substance. This situation is unsatisfactory both for the lecturer and for the students. The lecturer receives no meaningful feedback on whether the students could follow the topic in the lecture. Likewise, the individual student himself may poorly assess whether he is the only one who has lost the connection.

For this reason, eight freshman students from the "Informatik.Softwaresysteme" degree program decided to develop the "Mobile Clicker" within the framework of the project event "Students Lab". The idea behind the project is quite simple: the lecturer can use a mobile Android device to deliver predefined multiple-choice questions to the students during the lecture. The students then have the opportunity to answer the question anonymously on their mobile Android device or on a web page. Subsequently, both parties have the opportunity to have the evaluation of the question displayed in the form of a table and a diagram.

At the moment Android is supported natively from version 2.3.3. For the use of the Mobile Clicker on other mobile devices and notebooks, there is a website at mobileclicker.de for the lecturers as well as for the students. At the beginning of the summer semester 2013, the Mobile Clicker will begin its test operation at the Westfälische Hochschule (Campus Bocholt).
